How to Clean & Maintain Your External Shutters

External shutters are a popular option when it comes to window coverings in Australia, especially in coastal areas. Made of durable aluminium, and available in both powercoat or anodised colours, our outdoor shutters are the most stylish way to protect your windows from the harsh Australian environment, bright sun and possible intruders, whilst also offering privacy-control. Sliding louvers shutters generally fit to the outside of the building, deck or within a prepared opening and as such only have top and bottom tracks and guides.

Like any external window covering, Louvretec shutters can become dirty over time and require a clean to keep them looking and functioning at their best. Here’s a quick guide to cleaning yours.

External Louvres Cleaning Steps

1. Prepare a water based solution for cleaning

Firstly, you’ve need to make a water based solution for cleaning. Using a mild household detergent and warm water will suffice in ridding dirt, grime and sea salt residue from your shutters’ surface. Fill a bucket so you are ready to clean.

2. Wash The Slats Bot Sides

Secondly, as Louvretec Shutters are so easy to adjust with their seamlessly smooth system, position them in a way you find easy to clean and remember to wash both sides for a spotless finish.

3. Gently Scrub The Shutters

Using a soft-bristled brush or a cloth, gently scrub the louvre shutters to remove any dirt or grime. Do not scrub hard - be gentle. Be sure to pay extra attention to any areas that may be particularly dirty, such as the corners or crevices. Keep away from any motors and the ends of the louvres where the blade connects in to the drive system.   If the shutters are particularly dirty we recommend contacting your closest Louvretec dealer.

4. Rinse Them With Clean Water

Once you have finished cleaning the louvre shutters, rinse them with clean water. Be sure to remove all traces of detergent or cleaner, as these can leave a residue that can attract dirt and dust. Also check for any damage or issues since the last time you inspected your Louvretec Shutters.
